Abstract
This paper takes its cue from Gérard Genette’s Paratexts: Thresholds of Interpretation, to examine the liminal phrase arma virumque in the Aeneid and in its reception. The article explores the validity and relevance of paratextuality to the study of Latin literature; the status of arma virumque as a quasi-title in the reception of Virgil; and finally the meaning and resonances of arma virumque throughout the Aeneid itself.
