Additional information: This chapter, which is based on an ESRC-funded seminar series on policy and practice in post-compulsory education and lifelong learning in England, Scotland and Wales, provides both detailed information about how the systems operate in E, S and W and then draws out similarities and difference in relation to the education state and the policy process which help to explain why different policy approaches have emerged in the three countries. There is a brief section on Northern Ireland which allows the book to take a UK wide approach. Broader ideas about the nature of the education state, the role of markets and central and local governance of the system are discussed. (11, 506 words).
