Abstract

This paper explores the process of routine (re)creation in a design firm implementing new digital technologies. It does so through a longitudinal study of an innovative firm attempting to implement Building Information Modeling (BIM) across its organization. Data were collected intensively over a 15-month period at multiple embedded levels – individuals, firm and industry - showing how routines are developed and transferred. From this data, a process model of technological implementation is derived involving four stages: forming, preparing, enacting and reflecting. The source of generative change in this model is organizational routines, which are created and adapted as implementation progresses. This paper makes two main contributions. Firstly it provides a contemporary account of how digital technologies are used in organizations and shows that this iterative process is driven by dynamically changing routines that are (re)created over time by interdependent users. Secondly it contributes to an understanding of routine dynamics in creative settings, how routines are used to produce novel work balancing the need for standardization and flexibility.
