Abstract

In October 2006, Professor Michael Worton was invited to speak to the recent Museums Association annual conference in Bournemouth (23-25 October 2006) on the subject of developing the currently often under-used research potential of collections in museums and galleries. His presentation was in part a response to the Museum Association's 2005 report 'Collections for the Future', and in part an introduction to the work of the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The paper spoke also of the 'brokering' in research that can be provided by universities. He gave examples of how UCL is working in partnership with heritage professionals outside the university sector, helping them to develop access to their collections by researchers and lifelong learners and to explore important areas such as the value of object-handling. The Museum Association's annual conference and exhibition is the largest museum and gallery event in the UK and in 2006 was attended by over 1,000 museum and gallery professionals.
